Swim Teams Finish Eighth at BGMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Catawba men’s and women’s swim teams each finished eighth at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships which concluded on Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. The University of Tampa won the women’s team event among 15 schools, while Wingate claimed honors for the men, besting 14 teams.
Patrick Drakes (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Rudbechs Gymnasium) added a second event he will swim at the NCAA II Championships as he was under the “B” cut time in the 200 breast. He set a school record as he won the “B” final in a time of 2:09.46. He qualified to swim the 100 breast in action on Friday.
Drakes was involved with a second record on Saturday as he was a member of the 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:15.06. Joining him on the team was Alex Walpole (Colorado Springs, CO/Highland Ranch), Patrick Novak (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and Yakir Malul (Rishon Le-Zion,ISRAEL/Makif Chet). Both Novak and Malul swam in the “B” final of the 200 breast. Novak finished 14th and Malul 15th.
Katie Huff (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) set another school record for the women, this time in the 200 breast. She qualified for the final and finished eighth in a time of 2:30.15. Meredith Shultz (Richmond, VA/James River HS) swam in the “B” final of the 200 breast and placed 14th.
Catawba had a pair of top 15 swims in the long distance 1650 free. Grant Gibson (Owen Sound, ONT, CANADA/West Hill HS) took 11th for the men in a time of 16:50.59, while freshman Kara Morrill (Rockville, MD/Rockville HS) took 13th for the women with a time of 18:55.13.
