Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Lander
SALISBURY, NC -- Lander swept a doubleheader from host Catawba in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park, winning by the scores of 10-8 and 16-5. Gabe McCann (Hickory Tavern, SC) led the 27th-ranked Bearcats, driving in three run in each game, as Lander improves to 8-2. The Catawba Indians, ranked seventh, fall to 3-3.
Lander overcame a 7-0 deficit to win the opener. Tribe starter Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) held the Bearcats to one hit over the first four innings, but Lander erupted for seven hits in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-5. Devin Ridlehoover (Wendell, NC) capped the frame with a three-run homer.
Catawba kept the lead until the eight when Lander scored five more runs. Ridlehoover doubled home the tying runs and McCann found the gap with a flare to right-center that scored three more with two outs.
Bud Lanier (Rocky Point, NC) had three hits for Lander in the opener. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) each had two-run homers for Catawba in the fourth to give the Indians the 7-0 lead. Catawba picked up three unearned runs in the second, two coming on a single by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS).
The Bearcats broke open a tight game in the middle innings of the nightcap. Lanier’s grand slam with two outs in the fifth was the big blow, giving Lander a 9-3 edge. McCann added a two-run double in a three-run sixth.
Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run double for Catawba in the fourth. Lanier had put the Bearcats up with a two-run single in their half of the fourth.
Lanier had three hits and seven RBI in the nightcap, while Josh Lovvorn (Bradley, SC) and A.J. Nunziato (S. Setauket, NY) also had three hits. Freshman Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the seventh for Catawba.
