Lyerly's Five Hits Helps Baseball Snap Three-Game Slide
BELMONT, NC -- Catawba picked up a 10-4 win over host Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Catawba Indians snap a three-game slide and even its record at 4-4. The Crusaders fall to 6-7.
Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) went 5-for-5, drove in three runs and scored three times to lead Catawba. He put the Indians on top in the third with a double and Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) followed with a two-run homer. Tyler McKenzie plated a run for Belmont Abbey with a triple in its third, but Catawba would score unanswered runs to take control.
The Indians scored three in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ahearn, a RBI double by Ryan Query (Kannaplis, NC/Brown HS) and a groundout by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS). Hohn connected on a two-run homer in the sixth to push the lead to 8-1. Lyerly capped the scoring for Catawba with a two-run single in the seventh.
Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) grabbed the win in relief of Tribe starter Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy). Trombino allowed a run on five hits with five strikeouts, but left in the fifth after allowed a two-out triple and a hit batter.
