Baseball blankds Newberry twice in DH sweep

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College shutout visiting Newberry in both games of a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba won by the scores of 7-0 and 4-0 in registering its school record-tying third straight shutout. The Indians have now tossed 28 consecutive scoreless frames, just one of the school mark set in 1992. Catawba improves to 23-15 overall and 8-5 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 13-29 and 3-11. Sophomore Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) tossed eight innings of shutout ball to earn the win in the opener. He scattered four hits and walked five with five strikeouts in improving to 6-2. He run his personal scoreless innings streak to 15. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) got the Tribe on the board in the first as he was hit for the first of three times with the bases loaded to force in a run. Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Smith drove home a second run with a fielder's choice in the third, while a wild pitch and a single by Mike Robbins (Columbia, SC) put Catawba on top 5-0 after five innings. Doubles by Smith and Robbinsin the seventh led to two more runs, one a sacrifice fly by Isreal Morrow (Claremont, NC) and the other on an error. Robbins led the way for Catawba with three hits in the opener, while Morrow added two. Three of the four hits allowed by Snyder were infield singles. Sophomore Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) threw a complete game shutout in the nightcap. Over the seven innings, he allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four in raising his mark to 5-3. After a leadoff single by Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, SC), Hatley got a doubleplay ground out and went on to retire nine in a row before hitting a batter with one out in the fourth. The fourth inning provided the best chance for Newberry to score as Dean Walker (Afton, TN)followed with a two-out single to put runners on first and third, but Morrow raced into the gap in left to robGene Dotson (Savannah, GA) and preserve the shutout. Hatley retired the final 10 batters of the game. Catawba took the lead in the opening innings as Blair Reynolds (King, NC) connected for a one-out homer and Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) singled home a second run. Reynolds singled home Morrow, who had doubled, in the third, while Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) added a solo shot in the fifth to cap the scoring. #######
