Softball Falls Twice In Tight Games With USC Aiken
AIKEN, SC -- The University of South Carolina-Aiken swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Satcher Field. The Pacers won by the scores of 3-1 and 4-1 to improve to 9-5 overall, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-4.
Megan Lakes hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pacers the win in the opener. Catawba had tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS). Jennifer Day had doubled home the game’s first run with a two-out double in the sixth.
Kathleen Nichols allowed just three hits to Catawba and struck out four to take the win. Lauren Locklear had two of the nine Pacers hits off Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS), who posted five strikeouts.
Locklear scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give USCA the early lead in the second game. Thornburg tied the game for Catawba with a homer in the second, but the Pacers answered back with an unearned run in their second.
The Pacers stretch the lead to 4-1 in the fifth on solo home runs by Jessica Strickland and Candice Hardee. Toni Flessate scattered four hits and had four strikeouts in posting the win. Krista Bashline had two hits for USCA, while Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) collected a pair of hits for Catawba.
