Baseball completes sweep of Newberry, takes SAC lead

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College completed a three-game sweep of Newberry, holding off the visitors for a 5-4 win in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba improves to 24-15 overall and maintains its lead in the SAC with a 9-5 mark. Newberry falls to 13-30 and 3-12. Junior Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) tossed eight strong innings before getting into trouble in the ninth. He pitched a scoreless opening inning to help Catawba equal its record for scoreless innings with 29 in a row, then gave up a two-out home run to Stuart Kay (Greer, SC) in the second. The homer could have been a bigger blow, but Blair Reynolds (King, NC) turned a line drive to third into a double play just before the shot by Kay. Catawba had jumped to a 2-0 lead after an inning as Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) singled home Reynolds and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) followed with a sacrifice fly. Catawba used small to manufacture most of its runs, capitalizing on four sacrifice bunts and a pair of sacrifice flies. Motsinger doubled to lead off the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC), while Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) led off the fifth with a single, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a hit by Hill. Meanwhile, Abernathy was solid, allowing just three hits after the home run to Kay until the ninth. A chopper up the middle and an infield hit chased Abernathy, while reliever Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) walked Kay to load the bases, then struck out Travis Moore (Blythewood, SC) for the second out. Pinch-hitter Dustin Smith (Conway, SC) kept Newberry alive with a two-run double to rightfield, while Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, SC) plated a run with a hard comebacker to the mound. Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA), who came in to face Stevens, got Gene Dotson (Savannah, GA) on a fly to right to end the game. Reynolds and Motsinger each had two doubles for Catawba, while Southard also picked up two hits. Abernathy improved to 3-1, allowing seven hits, with one walk and three strike outs over eight and a third innings. Dean Walker (Afton, TN) collected three hits for Newberry. #######
