Women's Basketball Ripped By Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Carson-Newman rolled to a 93-62 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse. The Lady Eagles improve to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 15-11 and 7-8.
Shari Buford led the Lady Eagles with 18 points, while three others reached double figures. Lindsay Eggleston and Ashley Tipton each added 14 points, while Ashley Kyle tossed in 11. The Lady Eagles would can 51% of its shots on the night with Catawba making just 30%.
Carson-Newman raced out to a 25-9 lead and held a double-digit lead for most of the game. After falling down by 16 in the opening eight minutes, Catawba scored six straight points to close within 25-15, but the Lady Eagles responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take control.
C-N shot 51% in the opening half, held a 23-12 edge on the boards and helped force 10 Catawba turnovers. Buford (11 points) and Eggleston (10 points) each had double-digits by the half. Catawba hit on just 36% of its shots in the opening half and dropped off to 27% in the final 20 minutes.
Catawba never made a dent in the second half. Carson-Newman quickly built a 46-27 halftime edge to 50-27 and after the Lady Indians briefly pulled within 17 the Lady Eagles used a 12-4 to go on top 69-42 with 10 minutes remaining.
Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) led Catawba with 14 points. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) followed with a dozen with Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS) and Maggie Sullivan (Rock Hill, SC/Charlotte Christian HS) added 10 each.
