Women's Basketball Shakes Off Cold Start To Top Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba closed out the regular season with a 67-57 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-11 overall and 8-8 in the SAC, while the Tornados end their season at 6-21 and 0-16.
Catawba started slowly, making just one of its first 15 shots and trailed 10-4. A jumper by Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS) started a 7-2 run that gave the Lady Indian their first lead at 13-12 with 8:57 left in the first half.
Brevard would take a 34-33 lead to the break as Catawba shot just 31% in the opening half. Catawba got a three-pointer at the buzzer of the first half from Nisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) and continued that run into the second half. The Lady Indians scored nine more points in the opening three minutes of the half to grab a 42-34 advantage following a three-point play by Higgins
Catawba never let the Tornados within six after its run to open the second half. After its rough start, Catawba hit on 43% in the second half and held a 47-40 edge on the boards. Catawba went 19-of-21 at the line and made all five attempts in the final two minutes.
Higgins led the Lady Indians with 16 points and added nine rebounds. Long also just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Cameron Clark (Albemarle, NC/N. Stanly HS) had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
Samantha Winn (Candler, NC) led Brevard with 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Amanda Whitlaker (Asheville, NC) scored 11 of her 13 points in the opening half and had nine boards.
