Baseball's record 11 doubles not enough in 21-18 lossSALISBURY, NC -- Pfeiffer University scored four early runs, then overcame a 10-4 deficit to defeat host Catawba 21-18 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The four hour, 15 minute marathon included 36 combined hits and saw Catawba get the winning run to the plate in the ninth after trailing 18-11 in the seventh and 21-16 in the ninth, but Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) flied out to left to end the game. Pfeiffer improves to 20-15-1, while Catawba falls to 24-16. Pfeiffer pounded out seven home runs, including two each by Robert Scott (Concord, NC) and Jeremy Crawford (Virginia Beach, VA). The Indians responded with a school-record 11 doubles, which also allowed Catawba to equal its record of 111 two-baggers in a season set last year. Curt Mostsinger (Kernersville, NC) tied a record with three doubles as he went 4-for-4 with seven RBI, including a grand slam, and scored four runs. Scott collected six RBI for Pfeiffer as he went 3-for-4. Scott got the Falcons off to a quick start with a three run homer in the first. His blast was followed by a solo shot by Justin Little (Charlotte, NC) to give Pfeiffer a 4-0 edge. Catawba responded in its, tying the game on three straight doubles by Motsinger, Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC). Pfeiffer would come back in the second on a solo homer by Jordan Taylor (Charlotte, NC), but Catawba took the lead with a six-run third that was capped by Motsinger's grand slam. Crawford hit the first of his two dingers in the fourth and Scott hit his second in the fifth to close the Falcons within 10-8. Pfeiffer would take the lead for good in the sixth with a four-run inning. Ben Garland (Statesville, NC) started the frame with a two-run homer, while Taylor plated a pair with a two-out double. Pfeiffer added six more in the seventh to go on top 18-11 before the Indians rallied. Catawba's first five batters in the seventh scored as Israel Morrow doubled home two and Hill cranked a three-run homer. Pfeiffer added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to take a 21-16 lead. The Tribe loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a hit with no outs. A pop out and ground out cut the margin to 21-17 and after pinch hitter Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) drew a walk to load the bases, Blair Reynolds (King, NC) drove home a run with a single, setting up Southard who flew out. Hill also had four hits for Catawba, including a pair of doubles and a homer to drive in four. Reynolds had three hits and two RBI. Taylor went 3-for-7, with a double and a home run, and scored five times. Little and Jeff Robbins (Greensboro, NC) also had three hits. Jim Brown (Sparta, NC) was the most effective pitcher of the night as he tossed three innings, allowing two hits and two runs, with three walk and three strike outs to earn a save. Catawba used eight pitchers on the night. #######
