Higgins Eclipses 1,000-Point Plateau In Season-Ending Loss at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba was knocked out of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, falling to host Newberry 77-48 on Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. Newberry, seeded-third, improves to 18-10 and advances to the semifinals. The sixth-seeded Catawba Indians end their season at 16-12.
The lone bright spot for the Lady Indians was Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD/Blair HS), who scored 20 points. The senior entered the game 11 points shy of 1,000 for her career and picked up 14 in the opening half. She is the 12th Catawba women’s player to reach the milestone.
Newberry took control early building a 17-7 lead in the opening six minutes. Newberry took command with a 19-8 run to end the half. Newberry saw a 27-17 edge balloon to 46-23 in the final minute of the first half. Newberry hit six three-pointers in the opening half and shot 56%. Catawba connected on just 32% and were out-rebounded 22-13.
Catawba never threatened in the second half as Newberry led by at least 20 the entire half. Keena Phillips scored 20 to lead Newberry. Anita Bulcher had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Laura Marquart also tallied 16 points for the hosts. Monica Alexander had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Newberry cooled off to 33% in the second half, but controlled the boards, finishing with a 53-29 edge. Catawba shot just 30% for the game.
