Baseball Gets Back To Action, Tops Lake Erie
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba returned to baseball action for the first time in nearly two weeks and claimed a 12-3 win over Lake Erie on Thursday afternoon in a game played at Lenoir-Rhyne’s Bears Field. The Catawba Indians up their record to 7-4, while the Storm fall to 1-3.
Catawba collected 17 hits in the win, getting three each from Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS), Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS). Freshman Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) got the win, tossing his predetermined three innings and allowing just one hit.
The Indians took the lead in the third. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) singled with two outs and stole second. He scored on a hit by Ahearn. Query followed with a two-run homer for a 3-0 edge.
After Lyerly pushed the lead to 4-0 with a run-scoring double, Lake Erie cut the deficit in half in the fifth. Brandon James singled home a pair of runs to make the score 4-2. Hatley drove home a run for Catawba in the fifth and the Tribe put up three runs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-3. The Indians added three more in the eighth for insurance.
Query drove in three runs for Catawba with Ahern and Hatley adding two each. Ben Reed and John Shaposka each had two hits for the Storm.
