Softball Rallies To Earn Split With #22 Bloomsburg
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Bloomsburg split a softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Huskies, ranked 22nd, won by the opener 5-1, while the Catawba Indians rallied for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Bloomsburg now stands at 3-1, while the Lady Indians are 7-5.
In the nightcap, Catawba had just one hit, a double by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS), off Bloomsburg hurler Tara Reed (Williamsport, PA) over five innings. The Lady Indians would strike for three runs in the final two innings to earn the split.
Down 2-0, Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) opened the sixth with a bunt single and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) followed with a two-run homer to tie the score. In the seventh, Jesse Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) reached on a bunt single, and after a failed sacrifice, an infield single by Sabat and a walk to Marshall loaded the bases. Whitesides scored the winning run on a squeeze, beating the throw to the plate on the bunt by Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS).
Bloomsburg had taken a 2-0 lead in the third. Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore, PA) plated the first run on a sacrifice fly and Mandy Koch (Dauphin, PA) doubled home a second run for a 2-0 lead. Reed silenced the Catawba bats until the fifth.
Jamie Wells (Hebron, MD/Mardela HS) got the win in relief, tossing a scoreless seventh. Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS) shut down the Huskies for three innings in relief of Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS). Reed would surrender eight hits and fanned 11.
In the opener, Bloomsburg grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Koch delivered a two-run double with two outs to stake the Huskies to the lead. Catawba cut the lead to 2-1 in its third on a solo home run by Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS).
The Huskies added three more in the fifth to pull away. Mauro doubled home a pair of runs and later scored on a wild pitch. Shavaun Fisher (Coplay, VA) tossed the complete game. She scattered five hits and struck out nine.
Casey Massimini (Downingtown, PA) led Bloomsburg at the plate in the opener with three hits. Reed and Shen DeBaro (Milton, PA) each had two hits in the nightcap.
