Baseball Takes 4-1 Win Over LMU to Open Series
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) allowed just three hits over seven innings as host Catawba defeated Lincoln Memorial 4-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Railsplitters fall to 12-9 and 2-5.
Catawba out-hit the Railsplitters 9-3, but had to rally after a solo home run by Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) gave LMU a 1-0 lead in the fifth. It would be the final hit Ketner would allow before leaving in the eighth after issuing a leadoff walk.
LMU starter Sean Woolard (Parker, CO) matched Ketner for five innings, but Catawba would score four times in the sixth to take the lead. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) led off with double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) to tie the score.
Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) put Catawba ahead with a sacrifice fly then Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) followed with a two-run homer for the 4-1 margin. After the leadoff walk in the eighth, Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) retired LMU in order. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) entered in the ninth after a leadoff walk and struck out the three batters he faced to grab his third save.
Ketner, who improved to 3-0, issued a pair of walks and fanned three. Woolard struck out four over his five innings and allowed two runs.
