Softball Falls Twice At The Captain D's Classic
DAHLONEGA, GA -- Catawba dropped both games on Friday at the Captain D’s Softball Classic held at The Hill Softball Complex at North Georgia College and State University. The Lady Indians fall to 7-7 on the year.
In the opener against Columbus State, Catawba dropped an 8-4 decision. The Cougars struck for six runs in the second to take command. With one out, a hit batter, a walk and four straight hits helped Columbus State to a 5-0 lead.
Down 7-1, the Lady Indians clawed back within 7-4 after five innings. Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) drove home a run in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) singled home a pair of runs in the fifth.
That would be as close as Catawba would get as Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) lined into a double play with two on the sixth and CSU added a run in the seventh. Gordy and Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) each had two hits for Catawba.
Ninth-ranked North Georgia put up a pair of five-run frames to grab an 11-0 lead in the second game of the day and went on for a 12-2 win. The Lady Indians had five errors in those opening three frames. White singled home a run for Catawba in the fourth and Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) hit a solo homer in the fifth. The Lady Indians had just four hits.
