Baseball downed by BartonSALISBURY, NC -- Barton College defeated host Catawba 10-4 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Bulldogs rapped out 14 hits, including three home runs, to improve to 20-25. Catawba fell to 24-17.Catawba got a run in the first, as Blair Reynolds (King, NC) scored on a balk. Barton would take the lead for good in the third inning on a two-run homer by Trevor Lawhorn. A two-out, bases-clearing triple by Justin Wilkes in the fourth extended the lead to 5-1. Barton got a two-run homer by Dennis Blackmon in the seventh and led 8-1 in the eighth before a Tribe rally. Catawba’s first six batters reached base with Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) driving home a run with a single and Matt Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) followed with a two run single. That would be all the Tribe would get as the Indians left the bases loaded. Barton added a two-run homer by Brandon Clay in the ninth for the 10-4 final. Clay went 4-for-5 with his homer and two RBI, while Wilkes was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) set a new school record as he reached base safely in 13 consecutive plate appearances. The streak started with a hit by pitch in the last game of Saturday’s double header and ended as he reached on an error in the sixth after walking twice. Hill and Smith each had two hits for Catawba. #######
