Softball Drops Pair of Tight Games on Final Day at Captain D's Classic

DAHLONEGA, GA -- Catawba lost a pair of tight games in its final two games of the Captain D’s Softball Classic held at The Hill Softball Complex at North Georgia College and State University on Saturday.  The Lady Indians fall to 7-9 on the year after falling 6-3 to Columbus State and 6-4 to #9 North Georgia in games that were tied entering the seventh inning.

Catawba trailed Columbus State 3-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth, but rallied to tie the game.  Singles Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) and a Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) double got Catawba its first run.  A bases-loaded single by MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) cut the lead to one and a two-out walk to Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) forced home the tying run.

The Cougars would answer back in the seventh on a three-run homer by Carrie Jones.  Catawba put runners at second and third with one out in its seventh, but could not score.  Marshall had three of the eight Lady Indian hits in the opener.  Jamie Wells (Hebron, MD/Mardela HS) tossed a complete game for Catawba with four of the six runs being earned.

A bases-clearing double by Pilar Harden in the first inning gave North Georgia an early 3-0 lead in the finale.  Catawba would again fight back.  Marshall doubled home a run in the fifth to get the Lady Indians on the board and singled home a run in the sixth to tie the contest.  Cassie Markham’s (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) two-out RBI single gave Catawba a 4-3 lead.

The Saints would answer back in the seventh.  Jessica Skeels led off with a double and moved to third on an error.  She would score the tying run on a hit by Laura Voyles.  Leslee Smith put NGCSU on top with a two-out bunt single and the Saints added a final run on a passed ball.  Marshall picked up two more hits for Catawba, while Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) also had a pair of hits.
