Baker and Marshall Power Softball to Sweep of Limestone
GAFFNEY, SC -- Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from host Limestone on Monday afternoon at Lady Saints Field. Catawba evened its record at 9-9, winning by the scores of 8-1 and 10-9. The Lady Saints fell to 5-16.
Jamie Wells (Hebron, MD/Mardela HS) no hit Limestone over her four innings in the opener. She walked two and struck out one. Wells leveled her record at 5-5. Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) picked up a save throwing the final three innings and allowing a run on three hits with a strikeout.
Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) led off the game with a home run and Catawba went on to collect 13 hits. Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) also homered. Baker, Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) and Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) picked up two hits.
Baker and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS) each homered twice in the nightcap. Marshall singled home two runs in the first and Baker hit a two-run shot in the second as Catawba took a 5-0 lead.
Limestone cut the margin to 5-4 after four innings on a bases-clearing double by Christina Woolgar. Baker extended the Catawba lead to 7-4 with a two-run homer in the fifth, but the Lady Saints exploded for five runs in their fifth to go up 9-7 with Woolgar doubling home two more.
The Lady Indians came right back in the sixth. With two outs, Baker hit a solo homer. Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) followed with a single then Marshall hit another two-run homer to put Catawba back on top.
Wells relieved Murray after Limestone led off with a double in the sixth. She allowed just one hit over her two innings to grab the save. Murray won in relief, tossing two-thirds of an innings and allowing one unearned run.
Baker, Sabat and Marshall each had three hits with Markham collecting two more. Marshall had six RBI. Woolgar had three hits and five RBI for Limestone in game two, while Hannah Mills also had three hits.
