Softball gains split with Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, NC -- Catawba College split a softball doubleheader with host Belmont Abbey on Wednesday afternoon. Belmont Abbey took the opener 6-3, while the Lady Indians won the second game 5-4. Catawba now stands at 13-31-1. Catawba fell behind 4-0 in the opener after an inning, but fought back to close within 4-3 int he fifth as Cari Griffin (Olney, MD) tripled in a run and scored on a hit by Shannon Handy (Advance, NC). Another run scored on an error, but the Lady Indians failed to tie the game after loading the bases with one out. The Lady Crusaders added two more runs in the fifth. The Lady Indians also trailed the nightcap after an inning, but scored twice in the third on a single by Vivian Lee (Salisbury, NC) to take a 2-1 lead. Belmont Abbey tied the game in its third, but Catawba responded with a three-run fourth to go on top for good, a two-run double by Jess Gimbel (King George, VA) was the big blow. Belmont Abbey closed the gap with a pair of runs in the sixth and put two on with two out in the seventh before Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) got a ground ball to earn the win on the mound. Griffin finished the doubleheader with three hits for Catawba, while Jackie Carson (Summerland Key, FL) had a pair of hits in the second game. #######
