Baseball Squanders 6-1 Lead in Loss to #7 North Georgia
DAHLONEGA, GA -- North Georgia rallied for a 9-8 win over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Stein Stadium. Chad Sage’s two-out RBI single lifted the seventh-ranked Saints, who improve to 15-7. The Catawba Indians fall to 9-6.
Catawba jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after three innings. Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) had a two-run homer in the first and the Indians added two more in the second, one coming on a sacrifice fly by Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS).
A bases loaded walk to Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) forced in a run in the third and another run scored on an error, but the Tribe left the bases loaded. North Georgia began is comeback in the fourth as the first seven Saints reached base in the fourth.
Nicholas Fryman had a two-run double in the frame. Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) allowed the last two of the seven hits, but settled down with the bases loaded and no outs to get a force at home, a pop up and fly out.
After an error allowed McMillan to score following a double in the fifth, Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) doubled home Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) in the sixth to give Catawba an 8-5 edge.
The Saints were able to tie the score in the seventh on a two-run homer by Brad Hall then scored the go-ahead run in the eighth. Andre Airich was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch then scored on Sage’s single.
Blake Hobby got the win in relief. He shut out Catawba over the final two innings, allowing just one hit. Catawba had just seven hits with Ahearn, McMillan and Craige Lyerley (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each collecting two.
