Softball Trades Shutouts With Faimont State, Wallace Tosses One-Hitter In Nightcap
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Fairmont State split a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. Fairmont State claimed a 1-0 win in the opener, while the Catawba Indians grabbed an 8-0 win in game two. Catawba now stands at 12-10 on the season, while the Falcons are 3-3.
A two-out rally by Fairmont State in the fourth led to the lone run of the opener. After a pair of groundouts to start the inning, Brooke Keene (Proctor, WV) walked, Danielle Dalton (Chapmanville, WV) singled and Kayla Gray (Benwood, WV) walked to load the bases. Chelsea Sheets (Carrollton, OH) delivered the winning hit with a single up the middle.
Heather Shutler (Simpsonville, SC) limited Catawba to just two hits and retired the final nine batters. She walked two and struck out five. Fairmont State collected eight hits with Gray and Kristy Rausch (Mason, OH) each picking up two.
The Lady Indians jumped on top early in the nightcap. With two outs in the first, Catawba loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles by Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS). Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) brought home the first run by drawing a walk that forced home Allie Marshall (Pleasant Gaarden, NC/SW Guilford HS).
Catawba moved ahead 4-0 in the second. After a walk and error to open the frame, Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) followed with a three-run homer. That was more than enough support for Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS), who tossed a one-hitter in the five inning win. She walked none and struck out two.
The Lady Indians ended the game with four runs in the fifth. Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) hit a two-run homer and Markham had a two-run single. Catawba had 10 hits in the nightcap with Markham collecting three. She had one hit in the opener. Thornburg, who also had a hit in the opener, had two hits, along with Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS).
Whitnie Highland’s (Scott Depot, WV) bunt single to lead off the second was the lone hit for Fairmont State in the nightcap. The only other baserunner for the Falcons in game two reached on a one-out error in the fifth.
