Baseball Settles For Split in SAC Doubleheader at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba and host Mars Hill split a doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Henderson Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 16-4 with the Lions earning the split with a 6-3 win in game two. Catawba now stands at 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, while Mars Hill is 13-15 and 2-6.
The Indians blew open game one when they sent 16 batters to the plate in a 10-run fifth that gave Catawba a 14-1 lead. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) capped the frame with a grand slam.
Mars Hill had taken an early lead on a RBI single by Brian Williams. A two-out single by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) in the third was followed by a Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) homer to give the Tribe a 2-1 edge.
In the big fifth inning, the first seven batters collected hits to push the lead to 8-0. After two outs were recorded, a walk, a single and a walk upped the lead to 10-0. Lyerly then belted his grand slam. Ahearn and Lyerly each had two hits in the frame.
Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Of Catawba’s 16 hits, Ahearn, Hohn, Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) and Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) had three each. Lyerly had six RBI and Hatley also homered.
Three of the first five Mars Hill batters homered to stake the Lions to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. Michael Dobre led off with a homer, Williams had a two-run shot and Matt Oleski a solo homer. Catawba cut a 6-0 deficit in half in the sixth on a three-run homer by Query, but that would be as close as the Indians would get.
Alex Britt got the win for Mars Hill. He pitched into the sixth and left after McMillan reached on an error following Query’s homer. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out one. Greg Smith got the final four outs for the Lions to grab the save.
Catawba had six hits in game two with Ahean, Query and Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) each collecting a pair.
