McSweeney Pitches Baseball Past St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, NC -- Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake HS) limited host St. Andrews to one run over seven innings as Catawba defeated the Knights 10-3 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 12-8, while St. Andrews falls to 5-19.
Catawba took a 2-0 lead after a half innings as Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) drew bases loaded walks with two outs.The lone run allowed by McSweeney came in the first on a two-out single by Josh Axelsen (St. Charles, IL).
After the single, McSweeney sat down 15 consecutive batters as Catawba pulled away.Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) had a RBI double in the third and Parker singled home a run for a 4-1 edge.The Indians broke the contest open in the sixth as a two-out rally produced six runs.Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) drilled a grand slam and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) doubled home two more.
The Knights added two late unearned runs in the ninth to cut the final margin of defeat to seven. Senior Ivan Rodriquez (New York, NY) drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice and Ethan Powell (Greenville, NC) concluding the scoring with an RBI-single.Powell and Samson Williams (Wilmington, NC) each had two hits for St. Andrews.
Catawba got two hits from Hohn and Query.Query and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each scored three runs.McSweeney allowed just five hits with no walks and struck out six in improving to 2-1.
