Fairweather Shuts Down Wingate as Baseball Wins Series Opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) shut out Wingate over seven innings as Catawba defeated the visiting Bulldogs 9-2 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 13-8 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 12-16 and 2-5.
After two scoreless innings, Catawba broke through in the third. Jake Faggart (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a one-out single by Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS). Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) doubled home Faggart and Hatley scored on a groundout by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS).
Catawba threatened again in the fourth as the first two batters reached, but Wingate starter Tyler Almond (Oakboro, NC) got out of trouble. He pitched into the sixth where Catawba capitalized on two bunt singles, a flare to right and an infield to hit to ignite a six-run frame.
Fairweather limited Wingate to just three hits over his seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, GA) had a one-out double in the first, but was stranded at third. The other two hits off Fairweather were also doubles, one by Aaron Knowles (Hope Town, BAHAMAS) in the fourth and one by Joshua Karr (Richmond, VA) in the seventh.
The Bulldogs avoided the shutout in the ninth on a two-run homer by Spencer Robinson (Bessemer City, NC). Catawba finished with a dozen hits, getting three from Hatley and two each from Lyerly, Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS).
