Softball Opens SAC Play With Sweep at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba swept a doubleheader from host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at the C-N softball complex. The Lady Indians got strong pitching from Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS) and Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) to improve to 14-10 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 16-10, 0-2.
Catawba opened game one with four straight hits, getting RBI singles from Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) to take the early 2-0 lead. C-N battled back in its first with three runs. Sarah Little (Calhoun, GA) doubled home a pair of runs to tie the game and an Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, GA) gave the Lady Eagles a 3-2 lead.
That would be the only runs Wallace would surrender as she settled down and kept the Lady Eagles off the board the rest of the way, allowing just two hits over the final six frames. Catawba tied the game on a single by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) then took the lead with three runs in the sixth which included a two-run single by Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS).
Catawba had a dozen hits in the opener with Thonrburg going 3-for-3. Markham, Whitesides and Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) all had two hits. Wallace allowed five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in earning the win.
The Lady Indians would battle back in game two to grab the sweep. Carson-Newman took the lead in the third when Whitney Durham (Rossville, GA) tripled in a run and scored on an overthrow. Catawba scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game, getting two-out RBI doubles from Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Thornburg..
Catawba took the lead in the sixth, rallying after two were out. Whitlesides singled and Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) connected on a two-run homer for the 4-2 lead. Cobb got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth and Wallace finished off the game to earn the save. She issued a pair of two-out walks, but In the first game, the Lady Eagles produced five hits and committed three ergot a groundout to end the game.
Cobb allowed six hits, walked two and struck out seven in her six innings for the win. Wallace did not allow a hit and had one strikeout. Marshall and Thornburg each had two hits for Catawba. Durham had two of the six Lady Eagle hits.
