Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and Wingate split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Newman Park. Wingate claimed an 11-3 win in the opener, while the Catawba Indians rolled to a 17-3 victory in the nightcap. Catawba is now 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs are 13-17 and 3-6.
Dodson McPherson (Graham, NC) had four hits and four RBI to pace the Bulldogs in the opener. Lee Oxendine (Laurinburg, NC) scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) had two hits, including a home run for Catawba.
Wingate was held to three hits in the nightcap by Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS), who went five innings. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned and he fanned five. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) and Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) each went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a home run to lead the Tribe offense.
Wingate scored four runs in the first inning of the opener to grab control. Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, NC) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-run homer by Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, GA). McPherson had a key two-out, two-run single. Catawba cut the lead in half on Query’s two-run homer in the Indian first.
The Bulldogs added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings then broke the game open with a four-run eighth. Spencer Robinson (Bessemer City, NC) had a three-run double and scored on a double by McPherson. Mark Letchworth (Greenville, NC) added three hits for the Bulldogs.
Hohn put Catawba on top 1-0 with a solo home run in the first inning of game two. Logan Isaacs (Wakefield, NC) gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with a two-out single in the second, but Catawba answered with 11 runs in its second inning to blow the game open.
Hohn gave Catawba a 5-2 lead with a three-run double and Hatley connected on a grand slam for a 10-2 edge. Jake Faggart (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) added a two-run homer to cap the inning. Catawba hit four homers in the second game as Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) also went deep.
Zeb Link (Woodlead, NC/W. Rowan HS) also had three hits for Catawba in the 17-hit attack. Faggart had two hits and four RBI. Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, NC) had a home run for Wingate.
