Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from Newberry on Monday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians, now 18-9 overall and 9-3 in the SAC, won the opener 5-0 behind a three-hitter from Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) then outlasted the hosts in the nightcap 5-4 in 12 innings. Newberry falls to 11-15 and 5-6.
Ketner dominated the opener, facing the minimum for six innings. Jovan Rohena had singled to open the second, but was erased on a double play. Ketner would sit down 14 in a row before Derek Bley and Robby Scaggs singled to start the seventh. The senior improved to 6-1 and posted three strikeouts.
Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) brought home Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) on a groundout in the first and Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) added a bases loaded single for an early 2-0 lead. The Indians tacked on three more in the fifth. Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) drew a bases loaded walk and Hatley got two home when Newberry failed to turn a double play and threw the ball away at first.
Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Hatley each had two hits for Catawba. Hohn and Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) scored twice.
Catawba led 4-0 in the nightcap before Newberry rallied. Newberry cut the lead in half in the fourth. Rohena doubled home a run and Jim Pollack singled home a run. Two more crossed the plate in the fifth to tie the score. Jose Rosa had a run-scoring single and Rohena tied the game with a two-out double.
The Indians scored three times in the second to jump out on top. The first run scored on an error then Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) doubled home a run and Ahearn singled home Link. Query had a solo home run in the third for the 4-0 lead.
Newberry reliever Thomas Berryhill shut down Catawba after coming on in the fourth, sitting down 13 in a row at one point before a leadoff single by McMillan in the ninth. He had six scoreless innings in relief. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) kept pace with five scoreless frames.
Newberry left the bases loaded in the 10th and Catawba did the same in the 11th before finally breaking the deadlock. Lyerly tripled with one out in the 12th and scored on a wild pitch. Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) helped the Indians with his glove in the bottom half of the frame, snaring a liner to lead off the inning and starting a double play to end the contest.
Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) got the win for Catawba with two innings of one-hit ball. Newberry out-hit the Indians in the nightcap 15-10 with Scott Horvath and Michael Morin each collecting three. Rovena had two doubles.
