07_baseball_MO_20

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to help lead Catawba to a 9-5 win over visiting Belmont Abbey in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians won for the eighth time in nine outings, improving to 19-9.  The Crusaders fall to 20-18.

Belmont Abbey grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after a half inning, but Catawba roared back with four of its own in the first.  Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) doubled home two runs with the first of his three hits to tie the game and Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) gave the Indians the lead for good on a two-out single.

McMillan singled home a run in the second as Catawba increased the lead to 6-3.  Belmont Abbey got within 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Shore (Landis, NC) in the fourth, but Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) shook off a shaky start to pitch into the seventh.  He allowed just two hits after the first inning.

Catawba got three insurance runs in the seventh on a pair of home runs.  Query had a two-run shot and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) followed with a solo shot to give the Tribe a comfortable 9-4 edge.

The Indians out-hit the Crusaders 14-6 and overcame four errors.  Fairweather (2-1) picked up the win, scattering four hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts over six innings.  Josh Hohn also enjoyed a multi-hit game for the Indians with a pair of singles and drew two walks.

Justin Vasquez (Palm City, FL) had two of the six Belmont Abbey hits.  The Crusaders also made four errors.  The first three Crusader batters of the game reached base, but after a RBI double by Daniel Kassouf (Lexington, NC), Fairweather got a RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly to limit the damage.
