Softball Drops Pair of 2-1 Decisions at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Host Wingate took both games of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate Softball Complex. The Bulldogs won both games 2-1 and improved to 21-10-1 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 16-14 and 3-3.
Wingate scored both runs of the opener in the first inning. LaRonda McClain (Kings Mountain, NC) led off with a single, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on an RBI single from Hallie Pettigrew (Uniontown, OH). Pettigrew would come around to score on an RBI groundout from Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, GA) to make it 2-0.
Catawba got on the board in the third when Carly Sabat (Warren, Ohio) scored on an RBI single from Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) to cut the Bulldog lead in half. Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, VA) kept Catawba off the scoreboard from there, scattering five hits and striking out two. Catawba pitcher Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) allowed just one earned run on six hits in six innings of work and struck out three.
McClain went two-for-three in the opener while Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, NC) had two hits, including a double to lead the Wingate offense. Marshall was two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Catawba attack.
Wingate scored the game-winner of the nightcap on Debra Grijalva’s (San Jose, CA) double with one out. Grijalva was two-for-four with an RBI in game two. McClain and Pettigrew each had a hit and scored a run.
The Bulldogs once again struck early, scoring in the first when McClain crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Chavis. The Lady Indians tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS).
Pettigrew reached first on a one-out single in the seventh. Grijalva followed by launching a grounder that bounced over the head of the Catawba shortstop and all the way to the fence, with Pettigrew scoring easily from first base to win the game.
Blankenship got the win in relief, allowing only one hit in three and two-thirds innings of work. Cristin Kelly (Chagrin Falls, OH) got the start, allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. Freshman Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY) took the loss for Catawba, allowing two runs on eight hits in six and a third innings.
