Baseball Falls Twice at Barton
WILSON, NC -- Barton swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 10-5 and 12-5 to improve to 23-13. The Catawba Indians fall to 19-11.
Barton used a five-run fifth to snap a 3-3 tie and went on to win game one. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) had a big game in the opener for Catawba, going 4-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) had two hits and two RBI, while Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) also had two hits.
Query singled home a run in the first as Catawba went up 2-0. A RBI triple by Hohn in the second had Catawba on top 3-1. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second and fourth to tie things before Jonathan Nichols started the big fifth inning with a lead off homer.
The Indians battled back from an early 3-0 deficit in the nightcap, tying the game on a two-run homer by Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) in the fifth. Barton took the lead in its fifth on a single by Barrett Martin then broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth. The inning was capped by a three-run homer by Braxton Lewis.
Ahearn had two hits for Catawba in the second game. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) also had two hits with a homer. Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridgeview HS) had a pinch-hit homer for Catawba in the seventh and Query doubled in a run. Ryan McCleney had two hits in each game for Barton.
