Baker's Homer Helps Sotball Split Doubleheader With Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 7-5, while Newberry stormed back to take game two 8-0. The Lady Indians move to 17-15 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. Newberry stands at 24-9 and 5-1.
Ryann Baker’s (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) three-run homer proved to be the difference in game one. Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, FL) tossed a two-hitter and drove in a pair of runs to help Newberry pick up the split.
Catawba trailed 3-0 after an inning of the opener. Kat Hammond (Irmo, SC) had a two-run homer for the visitors and Huckestein followed with a solo shot. Catawba freshman starter Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS) weathered the storm and went the distance to improve to 6-2.
Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) got the Catawba rally started as she doubled home a run in the second. In the third, Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) drew a walk and came around to score when Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) hustled her way to a double on a grounder up the middle. Sabat would score on a single by Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS).
Newberry took the lead back in the fourth on a RBI-single by Amy Jarrell (Dover, DE) then the Lady Indians scored four times in their fourth to take the lead. Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) singled home the tying run and Baker gave Catawba the lead with a two-out, three-run homer.
Huckestein singled home a run for Newberry in the fifth, but Wallace stranded two runners in scoring position in the sixth and sat the side down in order in the seventh. She scattered eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Newberry used two four-run frames to win the nightcap behind Huckestein, who surrendered just two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts to improve to 14-3. After the first two Newberry batters reached in the third, a throwing error on a sacrifice attempt allowed two runs to score and Huckestein later delivered a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.
Newberry would strike again in the sixth. Jessica Reid (Walhalla, SC) singled home a pair of runs with two outs and Hammond followed with a two-run double. Huckestein went 4-for-8 with four RBI in the doubleheader. Hammond also drove in four runs. Jarrell, Christine Stokes (Charleston, SC) and Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston, SC) each had two hits for Newberry in the nightcap.
Sabat and Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) each went 3-for-6 for Catawba in the double dip. The duo had the only hits for Catawba in the nightcap and had two hits each in the opener.
