Baseball Held Scoreless By #24 USC Aiken
AIKEN, SC -- Catawba was kept off the scoreboard for the second straight game in dropping a 1-0 decision to 24th-ranked USC Aiken in baseball action on Tuesday night at Hernandez Stadium. The host Pacers improve to 26-14, while the Catawba Indians fall to 19-13.
Justin Fry and Jeremy Smith combined on a seven-hitter to stifle the Indian bats. Fry would deal six innings in total, allowing just five hits and striking out seven. Smith would pitch the final three innings to tally his first save as a Pacer, allowing just two hits.
The lone run of the game was scored in the bottom of the second inning when Gary Asbill singled home Nick Aranas, who had singled to start the inning. The one run would prove to be all that the Pacers would need.
Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) led Catawba at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 night. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) added two hits in the loss. Catawba starter Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Carldwell HS) pitched well in his six innings on the hill, allowing just six hits.
The Pacers had seven hits in total in the game with Asbill and Ken Raborn each collecting two hits.
