Catawba Earns Doubleheader Split at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba and host Mars Hill split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Ponder Park. The Catawba Indians won the opener 6-1, while the Lions took the nightcap 4-2. The Lady Indians move to 18-16 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while Mars Hill is 21-15 and 7-3.
Catawba scored twice in the first inning of the opener and never trailed. Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) hit a sacrifice fly and Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) plated a run on a groundout. Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) doubled home a run in the third for a 3-0 edge.
Mars Hill got on the board in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Anna James (Bellevue, WA), but that would be all the Lions would get off Catawba freshman Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS). Wallace went the distance allowing just an unearned run on four hits to improve to 7-2.
Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS) hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning to give Catawba a 5-1 advantage and the Lady Indians capped the scoring in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool). Sabat had three of Catawba’s nine hits. Marshall and Whitesides each had two.
Catawba also scored first in game two. In the third, Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) connected on a solo home run and Thornburg added a RBI single. The Lions answered in their third as Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, NC) singled home a pair of runs.
Mars Hill took the lead in the fifth inning when Rebekah Huff (Mars Hill, NC) tripled to center to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, S.C.) provided an insurance run with a RBI single. Tara West (Urbana, OH) got the win in game two, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts.
Huff had three hits in the nightcap for Mars Hill, while Harber had two. Ashley Angell (Winston-Salem, NC) had two hits in the opener and had a hit in game two.
