Lacrosse Falls In OT to Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate midfielder Mike Bayliss (Lorton, VA) scored 1:18 into overtime to lift the Bulldogs to an 8-7 win over host Catawba in Deep South Conference lacrosse action on Thursday night at Shuford Stadium. Wingate improves to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the DSC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-7 and 1-3.
Greg Williams (Woodbridge, VA) led the Bulldogs with two goals. Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, SC) added a goal and an assist, while Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, VA) handed out two assists. Catawba was led by Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS), who had two goals and an assist. Braden Artem (Acton, Ont, CANADA/Christ the King HS) added two goals, while C.J. Dunshie (Apex, NC/SE Raleigh HS) had a game-high three assists.
Wingate got on the board first, getting a goal from Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) at the 10:25 mark of the first period. Catawba responded less than two minutes later on a tally from Tuohy to tie the game at one. A goal from Williams gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with just over five minutes remaining.
The hosts scored the final two goals of the period to take a 3-2 lead on a goal from Artem at the 1:02 mark. The second period would see only one goal, with Catawba taking a 4-2 lead on a goal from senior attack Mike Dolesh (Aquasco, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken HS) 11 seconds before halftime.
The Bulldogs scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 5-4 lead on a goal from Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, VA) at the 7:34 mark. Catawba tied the game on goal by defender Patrick Flannery (Acworth, GA/Kell HS) with 3:04 remaining in the third.
Wingate went back on top at 6-5 with just six seconds left in the third period on a tally by Derek Malone (Cookeville, TN) netted a goal with six seconds remaining in the period. Catawba scored the next two goals to grab a 7-6 edge. Tuohy tied the game two minutes into the fourth and Artem put the Indians ahead at the 7:52 mark. The Bulldogs sent the game to overtime on a goal from Williams with 3:06 remaining in regulation.
Wingate held a 44-21 advantage in shots, including a 27-15 edge in shots on goal. Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, FL) had six saves for the Bulldogs. Colin McClimans (Washington, DC/The Maret School) racked up 19 saves on the night. Wingate also held a 44-32 advantage in ground balls, led by Hodsdon with seven.
Dave DiLuigi (Saugus, MA) scored the first of his five goals just 30 seconds into the game to give the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish. Michael Brown (Hartford, CT) scored two goals in the early spurt and assisted on the opening goal. DiLuigi capped the opening barrage with 4:24 left in the quarter for the 5-0 edge.
Catawba scored four of the next six goals, two by Braden Artem (Acton, Ont, CANADA/Christ the King HS), to pull within 7-4 at the 9:13 mark of the third quarter. Three goals by the Crusaders upped their lead to 10-4 before goals by Artem and Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) cut the deficit to 10-6 with 9:43 remaining. DiLuigi scored at the 9:07 mark as Belmont Abbey tallied three of the final four goals.
