Softball Posts Two Shutouts in Sweep of Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba posted a pair of shutouts en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 2-0 and 7-0 to improve to 20-16 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. The Pioneers fell to 12-26 and 3-9.
Freshman Chelsea Wallace (Danville, KY/Danville HS) tossed a one-hitter in the opener for Catawba. She struck out four in improving to 8-2. Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) allowed three hits in game two, which was halted after four and half innings due to rain.
In the opener, Catawba broke through in the fourth on a two-out rally with four straight hits. Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) drove home the run as she singled home Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS), who had started the rally. The Pioneers avoided a further deficit when Rachel Wilburn (Chuckey, TN) threw out a runner at the plate following a hit by Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/Howland OH).
The Lady Indians picked up an insurance run in the fifth as Kathryn Geouge (Canton, NC/Pisgah HS) led off with a double and scored when Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) followed with a triple. Holli Cadenhead (Van Vleck, TX) worked out of a no-out, bases loaded jam to keep the Pioneers within striking distance.
The lone hit off Wallace was a leadoff single by Tasha Morrell (Russellville, TN) in the third. That would lead to the best scoring chance for Tusculum in the opener, but Wallace worked out of a jam with runners at second and third and one out. She got a come-backer to the mound and a sliding catch by Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) in center to end the frame. The only two base-runners after the third were a pair of hit batters.
Catawba broke game two open with a six-run third. Gordy had given the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly then Baker started the big inning with a leadoff home run. Justice capped the frame with a grand slam.
Tusculum had a pair of hits in the opening inning off Cobb, but Baker threw out a runner attempting to steal and Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) threw out a runner at first on a hard hit ball to right. The Pioneers had just a two-out single in the second and a one-out walk in the third after the opening inning.
Justice went 3-for-5 with five RBI in the doubleheader for Catawba. Baker was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
