Baseball Takes Two From Lenoir-Rhyne Behind Link and Query

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a pair of wins over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.  The Catawba Indians won the completion of a suspended game 5-4 then took a 14-3 victory in a following game.  Catawba improves to 22-13 overall and 11-3 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 23-16 and 9-8.

In the halted game, Catawba led 5-3 when the game was stopped due to lightening in the bottom of the fifth.  The Indians had rallied from an early 3-0 deficit.  Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) tied the game in the fourth with a three-run homer and a two-out run-scoring double by Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) put the Indians on top.

Link doubled home a run in the fifth just before the game was stopped.  The Bears had taken the early lead on a two-run double by Michael Pleau (Vero Beach, FL) in the second and a RBI groundout from Mex Loveland (Bradenton, FL) in the third.

The lone run after the game was resumed came on a home run by Loveland to leadoff the eighth.  Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save.  Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) got the win, tossing five innings before the game was halted.  He allowed three runs, two earned, off eight hits with four strikeouts.

Loveland drove home a run for Lenoir-Rhyne in the opening frame of the second game as the Bears again took a 3-0 lead.  Two other runs scored in the first inning off a Catawba error.  The Indians fought back on a two-run double by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) in the first and two runs off a Bear throwing error in the second.

Catawba erupted for six runs in the third to break the game open.  Eleven batters went to the plate in the inning with Query capping the outburst with a two-run single.  The senior finished off the scoring with a single in the sixth for his fifth RBI of the contest.

Query had four hits in the 18-hit attack for Catawba in the second game.  Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) each had three hits.  Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) went six innings to grab the win.  He scattered eight hits with only one run being earned while striking out four.
