Query's Two Homers Pace Baseball to Sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba built an early 6-0 lead then held off visiting Lenoir-Rhyne to complete a three-game sweep in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon with a 10-7 win. The Catawba Indians got a pair of three-run homers from Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) in improving to 23-13 overall and 12-3 in the SAC. The Bears fell to 23-17 and 9-9.
Catawba had just three hits over the first five innings, but all were round-trippers. The Indians scored four times in the first inning on just one hit. After a pair of walks to open the frame, Query connected on the first pitch he saw for his first homer and a 3-0 lead. A walk and a hit batter led to the final run, which crossed the plate on a groundout by Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS).
Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) had a solo home run in the second and Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) hit a solo shot in the fourth for the 6-0 lead. The Bears chipped away at the deficit and pulled within 6-4 in the seventh after a two-out, two-run double by Max Loveland (Bradenton, FL).
Catawba got the runs right back in its seventh with Query again connecting for the big blow with his second three run homer for a 9-4 edge. Lyerly had led off with a single and Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) reached on error before Query again launched the first pitch he was offered. McMillan later doubled home a run to extend the lead to 10-4.
Lenoir-Rhyne rallied in the ninth, scoring three times, but Hatley got the final two outs. Loveland had one of the RBI in the ninth and finished with two hits and three RBI on the day. Hank Wofford (Clover, SC), Evan Taylor (Charlotte, NC), Jake Hartley (Bluffton, SC) and Anthony Sulley (Charlotte, NC) also had two hits for the Bears, who out-hit the Indians 13-8.
Query’s two hits and six RBI paced Catawba. Lyerly had two hits and scored three runs. McMillan also had a pair of hits and drove in two. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) picked up the win as he limited the Bears to five hits and two runs (one earned) over his six innings.
