Hatley's Late Homer Lifts Baseball to 8-7 Win Over Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba claimed an 8-7 win over Pfeiffer in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) collected four hits, while Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) each drove in three runs to help the Catawba Indians improve to 24-13. The Falcons fall to 25-16-1.
Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) broke a 7-7 tie in the seventh with a two-out, solo home run down the right field line. Hatley took the mound in the ninth and recorded two strikeouts, but walked two. Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) posted his fifth save, getting a strikeout to end it.
Lyerly singled in his first four at bats and got things started in a three-run first. Ahearn delivered a two-run double with the bases full and McMillan picked up a sacrifice fly as the Indians built an early 3-0 lead. Pfeiffer fought back with and went on top 4-3 in the third when Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Indians got out of the third without further damage and reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Another leadoff single by Lyerly set the stage and he scored on a double by Hatley to tie the contest. Ahearn added a sacrifice fly and McMillan a two-run homer to extend the lead to 7-4. Pfeiffer got back even in the fifth on a three-run homer by Dunn.
Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) picked up the win with two hitless innings of relief. He allowed one walk. Hatley had three hits and scored three runs for the Indians. Dunn had two hits and five RBI for the Falcons. Pfeiffer managed just six hits on the night and only two after a Zack Pou (Stanley, NC) double with no outs in the third.
