Baseball Splits DH With #11 Tusculum Behind Holmes' Four-Hit Shutout
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and 11th-ranked Tusculum split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Newman Park. Jared Richmond (Fort Smith, AR) doubled twice and scored twice to help Tusculum to a 4-3 win in the opener, while Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) tossed a four-hit shutout as Catawba claimed the nightcap 5-0. The Catawba Indians now stand 25-14 overall and 13-4 in the SAC. The Pioneers are 31-13 and 16-3, maintaining their two game lead over Catawba heading into the final weekend of play.
Richmond doubled to lead off the second inning of the opener and scored on a double by Paul Finger (Lincolnton, NC) to put the Pioneers on top. Tusculum added three more in the third. After a groundout by Sean Cotten (Mooresville, NC) plated the first run, Richmond doubled home a run with two outs and Sean Finucane (Cortland, NY) followed with a single for the 4-0 edge.
Catawba starter Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) settled down after the third and allowed just a walk and a hit until he exited with two outs in the sixth. The Indians finally got to Pioneer starter C.J. Hillyer (Abington, MA) in the fifth. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) and Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) singled home runs to cut the deficit in half.
Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) pulled Catawba within a run on a solo homer in the sixth. Hillyer gave way to Rob Currie (St. Charles, IL) in the seventh, who surrendered a leadoff single then got a double play groundout and another groundout to post his sixth save. Hillyer, who scattered seven hits and struck out two, improved to 7-1.
Holmes did not allow a runner to reach third until the seventh in posting his first shutout of the season as Catawba earned the split. Three of the four hits allowed were doubles, but only Richmond, who led off in the seventh moved up a base. Holmes hit one batter and struck out four to improve to 5-2.
Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) singled to open the second and scored on a double by Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS). Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) singled home McMillan for the first of his two RBI. An error led to a Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) sacrifice fly in the third as Catawba increased its lead to 3-0.
White doubled home a run in the fourth and Link doubled home the final run in the sixth. White and Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) each had three hits in the doubleheader for Catawba. Richmond also had three this in the two games, all doubles.
