Softball Takes One Off #23 Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC -- Catawba bounced back to earn a split of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with 23rd-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at Bears Field.  The Bears won the opener 5-2, while Catawba took the nightcap 4-3.  The Catawba Indians are now 21-17 overall and 8-6 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne is 30-9 and 7-5.

Lenoir-Rhyne got a two-run triple from Kat Rivers and a RBI single from Carlee Carpenter to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the opener.  Catawba pulled within a run in third on two-out RBI doubles from Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) and Allie Marshall (Pleasant Garden, NC/SW Guilford HS).

The Bears extended their lead with single runs in the third and four innings.  Noel Belk homered in the third and Carpenter scored on an error in the fourth.  That was enough offense for Dawon Millwood, who allowed two runs off six hits while posting seven strikeouts to pick up the win.  Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) kept Catawba close, allowed just an unearned run in three and a third innings of relief.

Cobb got the win in the nightcap for Catawba as she allowed three run (two earned) off six hits.  Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-out RBI double in the sixth.

Catawba had jumped to an early lead in the nightcap.  Baker scored off an error in the first and Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL/Mitchell HS) singled home another for a 2-0 lead after an inning.  Kristyn Funderburke (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) singled home a run in the third for a 3-0 edge.

Lenoir-Rhyne got on the board in the third on a two-out double Belk and later tied the game on Belk’s two-run double in the fifth.  That set the stage for Baker, who drove home pinch-runner MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) after Funderburke was hit by a pitch to open the frame.

Baker had two hits in the nightcap for Catawba and joined Sabat with three hits on the day.  Sabat went 3-for-4 in the opener.  Belk went 4-for-5 with four RBI to pace the Bears.  Carpenter had three hits in the opener for LR.
