Baseball Falls 10-7 to UNC Pembroke
SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting UNC Pembroke scored in each of the first five innings and went on to a 10-7 win over Catawba in baseball action on Thursday night at Newman Park. The Braves extend their winning streak to 11 games and improve to 33-13. The Catawba Indians fall to 25-15.
Joe Mangum (Charlotte, NC) and Jason Coker (Charlotte, NC) each had three hits for UNC Pembroke, while Seth Kivett (Bear Creek, NC) drove in three runs. Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) had three hits for Catawba.
Catawba matched the Braves early scoring and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the second on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS). UNCP answered back and took the lead for good on a two-run homer by Kivett. Kivett had another RBI in a three-run fourth that extended the Braves lead to 9-4.
Jake Dailey (Chapel Hill, NC) settled down after a shaky third inning and pitched into the sixth to improve to 4-0. Three UNCP relievers combined to finish things up, recording eight strikeouts over the final three and a third innings. Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, NC) notched his eighth save.
The Indians, playing for the fourth time in three days and the ninth in 10 days, used nine pitchers. Catawba hit five homers in the game, including two by Hatley. His second pulled the Tribe within 10-7 in the eighth.
