Baseball Takes Two From Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from host Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Coan Field.  The Catawba Indians took the opener 8-6 and followed with a 7-1 victory in game two.  The Indians improve to 27-15 overall and 15-4 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 10-29 and 2-18.

The Indians got solid pitching from Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC/W. Caldwell HS) and Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) and a six-hit afternoon from Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS).  Lyerly was one of four Indians to homer in the opener.

Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) opened the scoring with a two-run homer to stake Catawba to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Brevard came right back with four runs of its own, the last two on a home run by Kellen Moman.

Fairweather would settle down after the first inning, retiring 18 of the next 20 batter before exiting in the seventh.  Meanwhile, the Tribe offense put Catawba ahead.  Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) tied things with a two-run shot in the third and Lyerly gave the Indians a lead with a solo homer in the fourth.

Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) pushed the lead to 8-2 with a three-run homer in the seventh.  Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) stranded a pair of runners in the seventh to get Fairweather out of a jam and Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) came on to get the final out for his sixth save.

Fairweather allowed seven hits and four runs to improve to 4-2.  He walked one and struck out five.  Lyerly went 4-for-4.  Josh Miller had two hits for Brevard, including a two-run homer in the ninth.

Mullins (4-3) allowed just three hits and struck out seven over six innings to pick up the win in the nightcap.  Miller drove in the lone Brevard run with a groundout in the second.  Query had put Catawba on top with a single in the first.

Seth Laughter matched Mullins until the sixth, when Catawba broke loose for six runs as the first five Catawba batters picked up hits.  Query put the Indians on top with a RBI double.  Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) singled home two runs and Lyerly capped the frame with a RBI double.  Lyerly, Query and Underwood all had two hits for Catawba in game two.
