Baseball Gets Past Brevard in 10 Innings; Lyerly Extends Hitting Streak to 24 Games
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba went extra innings to complete a weekend three-game sweep of host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Coan Field. Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) delivered a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 28-15 overall and 16-4 in the SAC with the 6-3 win. Catawba will finish second in the league standings. The Indians and Tusculum both finish with four league losses, but the Pioneers won two more game due to less rain outs. The Tornados fall to 10-30 and 2-19.
Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) scored on a wild pitch in the first to give Catawba an early 1-0 lead. Brevard would take the lead in the third on consecutive two-out, RBI doubles by Spencer Lynn and Matthew Pruitt. The Tornados extended its edge to 3-1 in the sixth on a two-double by Jason Merrill.
Catawba tied the game in the seventh on a two-out, two-run homer by Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS). Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) shut down Brevard over the final four innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven.
The first two Catawba batters reached in the 10th, but Brevard turned a double play to erase one baserunner. After a walk to Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS), Ahearn delivered a pinch-hit single through the right side to plate pinch-runner Spencer Cornelia (Greensboro, NC/Gatewood HS). Lyerly followed with a two-run double for a pair of insurance runs.
Lyerly, Query and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) each had two hits for Catawba. Lyerly extended his current hitting streak to 24 games and is hitting .549 over the past 12 games. Pruitt and Merrill had a pair of hits for Brevard.
