Baseball's title chance dimmed with 8-7 lossHICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and claimed an 8-7 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. The win improves the Bears to 28-16 overall and 9-9 in the SAC. Catawba drops a game and half behind league- leading Carson-Newman, falling to 25-19 and 10-7. Catawba jumped out to a lead after an inning after a grand slam by Curt Motsinger (Kernersville, NC). The Indians were looking for more, but a double play ground out ended any further damage. Lenoir-Rhyne got three runs back in the second, two unearned, and after Catawba went up 5-3, the Bears scored twice in the fourth to tie the score. A sacrifice fly by Mike Robbins (Columbia, SC) in the fifth put Catawba back on top, but the Bears would draw even again in the seventh on a RBI double by J.R. Hopf. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) put the Tribe back up in the eighth with a two-out single, but the Bears struck for two in the eighth on just one hit, a bases-loaded single by Chip Bradford. Paul Pope plated the winning run as he followed Bradford's single with a sacrifice fly. #######
