Lyerly Named SAC Baseball Co-Player of the Year; Six Earn All-SAC Honors

ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College junior third baseman Craige Lyerly, Wingate University senior outfielder Mark Letchworth and Tusculum College senior pitcher C.J. Hillyer the South Atlantic Conference's top baseball awards, the league announced today.  The awards were presented Wednesday night on the campus of Wingate University in Wingate, NC. 

Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) and Letchworth (Greenville, NC) shared the Player of the Year award.  Lyerly has posted a league-high 87 hits, is batting .444, and enters the SAC Tournament on a 26-game hitting streak.  Letchworth led the conference with a .780 slugging percentage, 18 home runs and 64 runs batted in.  Hillyer (Abington, MA) was named Pitcher of the Year after going 7-1 with a 2.20 ERA in helping to lead the Pioneers to the conference crown.

Tusculum Coach Doug Jones, who guided the Pioneers to their third conference championship in the past four years, was named Coach of the Year.  He wins the award for the second time in his career.  Wingate outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, NC), who led the conference in at-bats and hit .341 and drove in 33 runs, was named Freshman of the Year.  His 19 doubles tied for second-most in the league this season.  Tusculum second baseman Payden Houser was named the SAC Scholar-Athlete for baseball. 

Five others from Catawba joined Lyerly on the All-SAC teams.  Making first team with Lyerly was senior pitcher Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS), senior catcher Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) and senior shortstop Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS).  Earning second team honors was senior pitcher Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS) and sophomore outfielder Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS).

Ketner enters the league tournament with an 8-3 record with a 4.06 ERA over 12 starts.  He tossed one shutout.  Query is hitting .358 and has swatted a team-high 15 homers and 63 RBI.  Ahearn is batting .326 with 14 stolen bases.  Holmes has a 5-2 record and a 5-2 ERA and also has pitched a shutout.  Hohn is hitting .348 with 11 homers and 36 RBI.
