HICKORY, NC -- Catawba opened play in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament by scoring a 4-2 win over Newberry on Thursday morning at Bears Field on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University.  Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) had two hits and drove in a pair of runs to help the fifth-seeded Catawba Indians improve to 24-17.  Newberry, the fourth-seed, falls to 29-15.

The Lady Indians jumped on top in the first with a pair runs after two were out.  Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC/E. Rowan HS) walked to open the inning and was sacrificed to second by Sabat.  After a strikeout, Brittany Thornburg (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) doubled home Baker.  Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC/Homeschool) followed with a single for the 2-0 lead.

Newberry sliced the lead in half in the fourth.  Richelle Mirabal hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Christine Stokes.  After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, Catawba added to its lead in the sixth on a two-run single by Sabat.  Two walks and an error had loaded the bases.

Meghan Cobb (Richmond, VA/Bird HS) went the distance to improve to 8-6.  She allowed nine hits, but helped strand 10 Newberry runners.  Newberry scored a run in the sixth after two singles to open the frame.  Amy Jarrell got the RBI on a fielder’s choice.  Newberry had the tying runs on in the seventh, but Cobb got two flyouts to end the game.

Callie Gordy (Oak Ridge, NC/NW Guilford HS) and Thornburg joined Sabat with two hits.  Baker drew three walks.  Catawba had eight hits and drew five walks off Amanda Huckenstein, who entered with a 18-4 record.  Cobb walked only one.  Kat Hammond had a pair of doubles for Newberry.  Mirabal and Aissa Gatewood had a pair of hits.

Catawba will move on to face the winner of the game between top-seeded Wingate and Brevard.  That game will be played at 1:30 on Friday at Bears Field.  Newberry drops into the elimination bracket and will play the loser of the game between Wingate and Brevard at 1:30 at Hickory High School.
