Artem and Ross Lead Way as Lacrosse Downs Lees-McRae
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got five goals from red-shirt freshman Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King HS) and defeated Lees-McRae 10-6 in men’s lacrosse action on Thursday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 4-9 with a win on senior night. The Bobcats fall to 2-11.
The teams were scoreless for the first 13 minutes before Lees-McRae found the net at the 1:58 mark of the opening quarter on a tally by Neil Sleight (Warners, NY) for a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats added a goal by Kirk Rodgers (Casselberry, FL) with 35 seconds left in the quarter before Catawba answered 14 seconds later to get its first goal on a tally by Walter McDonough (Wilmington, NC/Laney HS).
After finally getting on the board at the end of the quarter, the Indians scored four unanswered goals to start the second quarter. Artem scored three of the goals as Catawba took a 5-3 lead at the break. McDonough and Artem scored to give the Tribe a 7-3 lead midway through the third quarter. The teams traded goals from there with Artem getting the final tally with 5:52 remaining in the game.
Senior goalie Brad Ross (Fallston, MD/Fallston HS) stopped 18 of 24 shots on goal in the pipes for Catawba, including eight saves in the opening quarter. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) had three points for the Indians on a goal and two assists. McDonough had two goals and Stephen Shuba (Orlando, FL/Olympia HS) picked up a pair of assists.
Rodgers led Lees-McRae with five points as he added four assists to his early goal. Michael Fahey (Buffalo, NY) made nine saves in goal for the Bobcats. Lees-McRae out-shot Catawba 54-32 and collected 41 ground balls to 29 for the Indians. Catawba won 12 of the 20 face-offs with Pierce Autry (Lexington Park, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken HS) winning 12-of-19 for the Indians.
