Lyerly's Five Hits Paces Baseball to Win in Tourney Opener

WINGATE, NC -- Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) continued his hot streak, going 5-for-5 and extending his hitting streak to 27 games, as Catawba claimed a 13-4 win over Newberry on the opening day of the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium on the campus of Wingate University.  The Catawba Indians, seeded second, improve to 31-15 and will face the winner of the game between third-seeded Mars Hill and fourth-seeded Wingate on Friday night.  Newberry drops to 17-22 and will face Lenoir-Rhyne in an elimination game on Friday at noon.

Newberry jumped on Catawba starter Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) with a pair of runs in the first inning.  Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, NC) drove home both runs with a one-out single for the early lead.  Lyerly extended his hitting streak with a leadoff single for Catawba, but the Indians did not score until the second when Corey Parker’s (Kernersville, NC/Glenn HS) two-out RBI single ignited a five-run frame.

Lyerly followed Parker’s hit with a two-run double and scored on a double by Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS).   Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) drove in the final run on a single.  Catawba added to its lead in the third as Zeb Link (Woodleaf, NC/W. Rowan HS) doubled home a run and Lyerly singled home another.

Parker extended the lead to 10-2 with a two-run double in the sixth and Query hit a solo homer in the seventh.  Newberry scored twice in the eighth off a pair of Catawba errors, but the Indians answered back with two of its own with Lyerly in the middle of things, adding a double for his final hit of the day.

Ketner settled down after the first and got the win to up his record to 9-3.  He scattered nine hits, walked none and struck out two.  Three of the four runs were earned.  Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) followed Lyerly with a 4-for-4 afternoon and scored three runs.  Parker had two hits and three RBI.

Gravely had two hits and two RBI for Newberry.  Casio Grider (Hephzibah, GA) also had two hits.  Newberry came the closest to ending Lyerly’s streak back on March 30 as the junior was hitless until a triple in the 12th which led to the winning run.  Lyerly has had multi-hit games in his past seven games, hitting .618 over that stretch.
