Mullins Tosses Three-Hitter to Keep Baseball Alive at SAC Tournament

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba stayed alive at the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament knocking off Newberry 12-0 in an elimination game on Saturday night at Ron Christopher Stadium on the campus of Wingate University.  The second-seeded Catawba Indians had dropped a 9-3 decision to top-seeded Tusculum (36-14) earlier in the afternoon.  The Indians now stand at 33-16 on the season.  Newberry ends its season at 19-23.  Catawba and the Pioneers will face off Sunday for the championship at 1 p.m.

Junior Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) was the story for the Indians in the win over Newberry, tossing a three-hit shutout to improve to 5-3.  He struck out nine and issuing only one walk.

Catawba gave Mullins plenty of offense to work with, pounding out 18 hits, including four from Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) and three from Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), who extended his hitting streak to 30 games.  Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS) also had three hits and added four RBI.

The Catawba Indians started the scoring with three runs in the first.  Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC/W. Rowan HS) scored on a wild pitch and Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS) blasted a two-out, two-run homerun.

Catawba added two runs in the third on a pair of RBI infield singles from Hohn and Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS).  The Indians added solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings on a Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) homerun, a Lyerly triple and a Hohn single.

The Indians added pairs of runs in the seventh and eighth.  Lyerly smacked a two-run homer to center in the eighth, finished a double shy of the cycle, and Hohn homered over the scoreboard in left field in the eighth.  Mullins was lights-out, allowing only seven baserunners en route to the victory.

In the first game of the day, Sean Cotton (Mooresville, NC) hit a three-run homer for Tusculum in the first inning and the Pioneers never trailed in advancing to the final.  Boo Morrow (Lexington, KY) threw seven strong innings to improve to 4-4.  He allowed three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Down 3-0, Hohn put Catawba on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third, but the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring one run on an error and Nate Grabowski (Pennellville, NY) adding an RBI single to make it 5-1. A Grabowski sacrifice fly in the sixth made the count 6-1 Tusculum.

A two-run homer from Hatley in the seventh cut the lead to three.  Tusculum again had the answer, plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Matt Ford (Jonesborough, TN) got it started with an RBI double then Payden Houser (Lincolnton, NC) added a two-run homer to give the Pioneers a 9-3 advantage.
