Query Named MVP of SAC Baseball Tournament

ROCK HILL, SC -- Senior catcher Ryan Query (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), who hit four home runs in six games, was named Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament.  It was announced by the league officials on Monday.  Query was one of eight members of the championship Catawba Indians team named to the All-Tournament team

Query hit .500 during the tournament and drove in seven runs.  His last home run of the tourney, keyed a three-run inning that gave Catawba its winning margin in the 4-3 victory.  He is joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Chris Ahearn (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS), Tim Holmes (Bay Village, OH/Bay HS), Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS), Kevin McMillan (Salisbury, NC/N. Rowan HS), Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale HS) and Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View, SC).

Ahearn hit .538 and collected a tournament-high 14 hits.  Holmes tossed a shutout in his start and a scoreless inning of relief in the final game.  Ketner won two games in the tournament, including the championship game on two days rest.  Lyerly, the SAC Co-Player of the Year, hit .483 with a tournament-best 21 total bases.  McMillan hit .478 with a tournament-high 10 RBI.  Mullins hurled a three-hit shutout to get Catawba to the Sunday finals.  White had a team-high .571 average, going 12-for-21    

Tournament runner-up Tusculum placed four on the All-Tournament team.  Pitcher Max Keleher, who went 1-0 in two appearances with a tournament-high 11 strikeouts.  Nate Grabowski had a tournament high .579 average.  Jared Richmond batted .391 and scored six runs, while Sean Cotten hit three home runs in the tournament.

Newberry is represented by second baseman Jovan Rohena, who hit .500 with a home run and five RBI and Thomas Berryhill, who pitched a win over Mars Hill with seven strikeouts and hit .308 at the plate.  Mars Hill College’s designated hitter Brian Williams, who had a pair of home runs for the Lions, rounds out the All-Tournament Team.
