Lacrosse knocks off Pfeiffer, advances to DSC SemifinalsMISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba College picked an opportune time to record its first-ever win over host Pfeiffer as the Indians upset the #3-seed Falcons 11-8 in the opening round of the Deep South Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Catawba had failed to defeat one of the DSC's “big three” (Pfeiffer, St. Andrews or Limestone) over nine years of lacrosse (0-29), which ended today after nine previous losses to Pfeiffer. The win advances the Tribe to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal against second-seeded St. Andrews at Catawba’s Frock Field. Top-seeded Limestone with face #4 Wingate in a 5 p.m. semifinal. With the win, Catawba improves to 6-7, equaling the school record for victories in a season. Pfeiffer ends its season at 6-5. The teams, which had played to overtime in their initial meeting this season, traded goals for the first quarter which ended in a 3-3 tie. Trevor Krauss opened the scoring for Pfeiffer just over three minutes into the game, but Catawba’s Josh Maphis answered a minute later and Demetrius Chirgott gave the Tribe its first lead at the 9:48 mark. Nick Brazee put the Falcons back on top with consecutive goals, then Justin Blum tied the score with 2:32 in the quarter and Catawba never trailed again. The Indians scored three unanswered goals over a two and half minute span midway through the second quarter to take control. Chirgott scored the first goal at the 7:30 mark, while David Dunnuck added a tally at 6:20 and Nishant Khatri at 5:09. It would be the first of three straight goals Khatri would score for Catawba. Pfeiffer closed within 6-4 at the half and added a goal by Brazee at the 9:32 mark of the third to get within 6-5. Khatri would twice give Catawba a two-goal lead, but Pfeiffer answered both time before Mike Delabar scored with 55 seconds in the quarter to put the Indians up 9-7. Pfeiffer again reduced the margin to a goal on Mike McFarlane’s tally at the 13:51 mark. Neither team would score over the next 10 minutes until Maphis gave Catawba a 10-8 lead with 2:59 left. Delabar scored a final goal with five seconds to play. Chirgott led the way for Catawba with two goals and a three assists, while Delabar added two helpers to his two tallies. Brazee led Pfeiffer with three goals, while C.J. Lefebvre had a goal and two assists, Catawba goalie Frank Fish made 15 saves, including six in the fourth quarter. The Indians also held a hefty lead in shots, 38-36, including a 21-7 edge in the opening half. Catawba also recorded 43 ground balls to 29 for the Falcons and took advantage of its 10 man-up opportunities with five goals.
